Overview of the 2nd game day of 2018 Arctic Curling Cup

On the second day of the Arctic Curling Cup, held with the support of Nornickel, 8 matches were played.

In the morning session, the first matches of the tournament were played by the two strongest Russian teams. First, Anastasia Bryzgalova and Alexei Timofeev convincingly beat Scottish pair Aitken/Menzies. After 5 ends the Russians were in the lead 6-2 and did not give the opponents a chance to get closer in the score. As a result, 8-4 and the first victory.

Then two Russian couples came out on the ice: Daniil Goryachev and Maria Komarova from St. Petersburg and Anna Venevtseva and Vasily Groshev, representing the Krasnoyarsk territory. Although these curlers are close to each other by age, but the achievements of Goryacheva and Komarova are much more serious, the main of which is the silver of the 2018 World mixed doubles championship a month ago in Sweden. Goryachev and Komarova confidently made their debut in the tournament – they secured a victory on the results of 7 ends, the eighth was not required - 10:2.

In another morning match, the Czechs defeated in the extra end young Swedish players – 11:9. The Swedes clearly should not be upset about this result – the Czechs are among the world leaders in this discipline, they twice reached the semi-finals at the World Championships. Also, the second victory in the tournament was achieved by the Finns, who are still pleasantly surprised here with their game. This time, the famous Markku Uusipaavalniemi had a brilliant last end, he brought his team 4 points at once and the victory in the match against Switzerland with a score of 9:6.

At the beginning of the evening session the second defeat in two matches suffered Canadians Reid Carruthers and Joanne Courtney, who are still surprised with a minus sign. After two ends, the silver medalists of the World Mixed Doubles Championships 2017 were inferior to the Scots 0-4. Then the Canadians tried to catch up with the opponent, in the last end they had a chance to even the score, but not succeeded – 6:7. Now it will be very difficult for Canadians to reach the semi-finals. But the Scots have two wins in three games and a good chance to get into the top 4. After the game, Carruthers noted the good game of the opponent at the beginning of the match, after which it was very difficult for him and Joanne to "return to the game".

Anastasia Bryzgalova and Alexey Timofeev in their second match again gained a convincing victory, this time over the Swedes. Already in the first end, the Russians won 5-0, after the 4th they were up 9-2, and the point in the match was put in the 7th end: 4-0 and 13:4 in the sum of all the ends, the 8th play was no longer required. Bryzgalova and Timofeev made a serious bid for the semifinals, and the Swedes have lost the chance to continue the fight.

In the final matches of the day two Russian teams played. It was expected that Venevtseva and Groshev will receive a "master class" from the titled Niklas Edin and Rachel Homan. There was almost no doubt about the victory of the Swede and Canadian over the young Russians, but it was clear that the stars of the world curling do not play 100 % of their capabilities, allowing themselves amazing for their level and professionalism inaccuracies. The situation suddenly escalated after the 7th end, which the Russians won 3-0 and reduced the gap to a minimum (5-6). In eighth end Venevtseva and Groshev steal end 1-0. The teams had to play the extra end, the game eventually lasted more than 2 hours. The last throw was from Homan, and the situation was very difficult – in the center of the house was a stone of Russians. However, at the decisive moment, the world champion's hand did not waver, she knocked the opponent's stone with a direct throw, Homan and Edin won three points and with them the match – 9:6. The issue of the promotion of the Canadian-Swedish pair to the next stage will be resolved tomorrow, but for the Krasnoyarsk team after three defeats, the final game will not have a tournament value. However, two more than worthy games against Switzerland and Canada/Sweden – this is something for which Krasnoyarsk should not be ashamed.

Goryachev and Komarova played with brother and sister Perret from Switzerland. Titled sister Perret tries to compensate for the lack of experience of his brother, but in general, the Swisses do not look like contenders for victory. The game was quite smooth. After 4 ends, the Swiss were ahead (4-2), but the Russians successfully played the fifth end, winning 3-0. Just three stones Komarov and Goryachev won in the last end, which brought them a victory - 8:6. Thus, the top two Russian pairs have an excellent chance of reaching the semi-finals of their groups.

After the last match, the participants attended a master class on cooking national dishes of the Taymyr sogudy and could taste stroganina and tinctures deer antlers.
